Bankrubtcy of Lehman Brothers changed the business world Research Paper
Bankrubtcy of Lehman Brothers changed the business world - Research Paper Example The study also discusses about the business scenario and stock market of the year 2008 after the breakdown of Lehman Brothers. 2.0 Arguments The following arguments relate to the effect of bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in various market segments. These arguments are true facts as it has taken from the reliable sources based on the topic. In the US, Lehman Brothers was considered as the fourth biggest investment bank and also a well-known brokerage firm (Hoffman & Et. Al., 2009). The fall down of Lehman Brothers in the year 2008 with no rescue from the government has brought appalling conditions to a number of people around the world. This occurrence was considered as a watershed event for everyone as it has played a significant role in the collapse of the global finance which brought dreadful situations and constricted the worldwide liquidity (Wei & Tong, 2009). The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers led to disastrous results on the ââ¬Ëprime broker clientsââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëstock lendin g fundsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëmoney market fundsââ¬â¢. This type of bankruptcy generated wider range of trading as well as immense exposure for several of the companyââ¬â¢s counterparties. The collapsing of one of the largest banks has led to failure of trust between brokers and banks. The investment banks as well as their prime brokers have not been trusted by hedge funds. The hedge funds, investment banks or prime brokers were not preferred to expose to any other parties. The leverage of hedge funds was decreased considerably and there was a continuation of ââ¬Ëdeleveraging cycleââ¬â¢ of investment banks along with other companies. The lending of investment bank has been decreased and borrowing and lending leverage that were accessible to clients and banks has been stopped (Aikman, 2010). After such occurrence, prime brokers demanded more money for securities. In the year 2008, liquidator Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) made apparent that a few assets that have been offere d to Lehman Brothers International Europe (LBIE) were considered as ââ¬Ërehypothecatedââ¬â¢. It was not apprehended for the clients on the basis of segregation and for that reason clients failed to obtain any proprietary interest in assets. Moreover, the investors of LBIE had fallen within unsecured creditors (Singh & Aitken, 2009). In the year 2008, the bankruptcy which had taken place in Lehman Brothers has strained the market to re-evaluate the risk that may possibly be raised. The price of junk bonds before the crisis was $2.50 and in 2007 the price increased to $4. Throughout the crisis the price raised to $6 to return to about $4.50 in the month of June 2008 and after the crisis it has increased to considerably higher point. There was a rigorous collision in money market finance due to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. On September 16, 2008, ââ¬ËPrimary Fundââ¬â¢ which was a $62 billion fund declared that it had experienced a loss on the $785 million worth of Lehm an Brothersââ¬â¢ debt (Zingales, 2008). The fall in money market has led to an effect on borrowers. The funds of money market are the largest purchaser of commercial paper but because of more concern towards redemption risk they preferred safe and liquid investment (Krishnamurthy, (2008). The money market was a significant basis of liquidity for the worldwide market mainly for broker-dealers. The run on mutual funds that is related to

Animal Farm Essay example -- LIterary Analysis, George Orwell
An infamous party came to light in 1917, with the overthrow of Tsar Nikolai II. Known as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, it established a new government under Vladimir Lenin. However a well-known man, by the name of Joseph Stalin, took over soon after Leninââ¬â¢s death in 1924. Stalin, often known as ââ¬Å"Kobaâ⬠in the party or ââ¬Å"Uncle Joeâ⬠to the western media, was not an effective speaker. Conversely, he had many supporters who spoke eloquently and with their help, he put the (then) Soviet Union under his regime. In George Orwellââ¬â¢s Animal Farm, the story of the Russian Revolution and its leaders are told through the use of allegorical satire. This masterpiece enlightens the human population about Russian communism and writes of the ââ¬Å"leaderâ⬠Napoleon, his troop of pigs, and the inhabitants of Animal Farm, who are oblivious to Napoleonââ¬â¢s corrupted ways and follow him blindly. In reality, Napoleon represented Stalin, who was a p oor speaker but corrupt and demanding. He had many supporters and propagandists like the leading Soviet Union newspaper Pravda and political speakers such as Vyacheslav Molotov who supported his stances and seemly unapparent exploitations. In Orwellââ¬â¢s allegorical novella, the main propagandist is a pig named Squealer. When the animals question the actions of Napoleon or past events, Squealer is always able to appease them with lies and propaganda. Squealer is able to manipulate the minds of the animals of Animal Farm, by his persuasive fabrication and soothing perjury. First, Squealer manipulates his fellow animals by exclaiming that the pigs do not like apples and milk, but rather consume them for the health of Animal Farm. These products came from the efforts of the hard-working animals of Animal Farm, wh... ...llibility but more so Squealerââ¬â¢s half truths and perjury. Using their faults against them, he is able to confuse the animals and trick them into actions they would not have made if Squealer was truthful. On the other hand, Squealer was not the only one that prevents the animals from resisting Napoleonââ¬â¢s inequalities. He has the aid of Napoleonââ¬â¢s dogs, weaned from birth to be savage, and the easily manipulated sheep that constantly repeat sayings they hear or are taught, such as ââ¬Å"four legs are good, two legs are betterâ⬠. In reality, the propaganda-spreading supporters that Squealer allegorically represents were very important to Stalin. Without their aid, Stalin might not have become as notoriously important as he was. George Orwell creates a wonderful telling of Communism in his novella Animal Farm and through his writing, he is able to educate millions of people.

Love Is a Fallacy Revision
Laken Sutton March 20, 2013 English 102 Gompf Revised Paper Women vs. ââ¬Å"Love is a Fallacyâ⬠ââ¬Å"Love is a Fallacyâ⬠is often viewed as an anti-women story. To many this piece exploits females by insulting women using stereotypes that have been around for a long time. The female sex, as a whole, has been fighting to overcome these degrading assumptions. This story uses a girl named Polly to display all women. She depicts them as ignorant and gullible individuals. During the Story, Polly is treated like an object or mere possession, rather than a human being with emotions, ideas, and thoughts of her own.The men focus mainly on her physical beauty. They also suggest that she could be trained, in the same way wild animals are usually trained, to think and act for herself. The end of the story leads you to believe that Polly, still representing women, is only interested in shallow material items when choosing relationships. The men in this story are shown in a way that m akes them seem superior to women using intelligence, wittiness, and patience along with physical and material attractiveness. In the beginning of ââ¬Å"Love is a Fallacyâ⬠, the two men make a deal to trade Polly as if they owned or had rights to her. What is even worse than the act itself is the object she is being traded for, a fur coat. This implies that Polly is only worth a useless, stinky, old fur coat. When evaluating her worth, the man judges her physical beauty and how useful she could be to him. He then decides to take her on as a project for him to improve. Then to show Pollyââ¬â¢s ignorance, the writer has her follow the man to be ââ¬Å"trainedâ⬠or taught to think. As he instructs her and becomes increasingly rude and impatient with Polly, she continues to use ignorant phrases and gestures to comply with the manââ¬â¢s commands and to please him.In the end, even though Polly stands up for herself and uses his teachings against him, she still is only speak ing from what he had taught her and not from her own thoughts. This gives the illusion that women can be taught, by men, to think and act a particular way. Polly then chooses to date one of the men who treated her as a mindless objected because he owns a popular coat (the fur coat that he traded for her in the beginning). This leads the audience to believe that Polly, still representing women, is only interested in material things and doesnââ¬â¢t mind how she is valued or treated.Women should find this story very insulting. For so long, women have fought to overcome these stereotypes. The female sex has always been judged based solely on their gender. A woman was taught to attract a man and begin a family. Once you had a husband, as a woman, your only priorities should have been to cook, clean, and care-give. Woman were also seen as ignorant pieces of property. Woman had to fight to work, get good jobs, vote, and so much more to prove their equality to men. Men were always seen i n the same way as the two men in this story. The two in this tale are extremely shallow, egotistical, and ride. This is not true for all men, but the older stereotypes set men and women as opposites. Women should be meek, stupid, kind, and proper. Men should be opinionated, intelligent, stern, and in control. These are almost complete opposites. Now it is accepted that woman and men are all different and yet equal. This story is rude to both sexes, but is harsher on the role of women. The women are seen in this story as objects that can be trained, traded, or owned. This could be avoided using a clearly satire atmosphere, or less extreme depictions of the female sex. This story was, however, very informative (for a student such as myself) learning to construct arguments correctly. Regardless of the anti-female message, ââ¬Å"Love is a Fallacyâ⬠is perfect to teach fallacies. Shulmanââ¬â¢s story gives a very blunt and clear understanding to the definition and purpose of fallac ies. It also gives very good examples of how to, or not to, use them in an argument. These tips can help a learning audience identify and avoid fallacies that would weaken their argument. This being true does not excuse the rude insulting projection of women.

This project examines the construction of subjectivity in...
This project examines the construction of subjectivity in Eleanor Antinââ¬â¢s Carving: A Traditional Sculpture (fig. 1) and Chris Krausââ¬â¢ Aliens and Anorexia (fig. 2) . These works inscribe notions of the self, the social, and the subject through and upon the body, addressing the interpolating poles of nutritive consumption and ââ¬Å"willing the body awayâ⬠through self-starvation. Throughout this essay, I will demonstrate how these artists engage with the spaces and discourses created around food and disordered eating to produce a counter dominant take on subjectivity, a thematic both artists attend to regularly throughout their careers. My reading prioritizes theories of the body, subjectivity, consumption, gender and difference, refusing to seeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Before attending to theoretical concerns I will first ground my reading in art-historical methods, explicating the position of these works within Antin and Krausââ¬â¢ larger oeuvres and within the historical contexts of their production. An analysis of form and medium also underlines a reading of these works that privileges self and subjectivity. In Carving, A Traditional Sculpture and Aliens and Anorexia, the live or temporal practices common throughout Antin and Krausââ¬â¢ careers are respectively mediated through photography and texts. By removing the material body from works that are essentially performative, the artist looks back over herself, commenting on, while creating her own lived subjectivity. I chose to position these two works together because, as Clare Johnson states in her study of Antin, Vanessa Beecroft, and Elizabeth Manchester, ââ¬Å"I want to discuss the artworks in terms that do not presuppose a ââ¬Ëproperââ¬â¢ form of feminist art practice, or suggest that the contemporary work supersedes the ââ¬Ëcriticalââ¬â¢ strategies of the earlier piece.â⬠Johnsonââ¬â¢s articulated aims are not to claim any single artist or artwork as ââ¬Å"feminist,â⬠per se, but to create rich and complex readings that ââ¬Å"articulate the inscriptions of feminist practiceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"reï ¬âect the relational web of mutually constitutive meanings.â⬠This web frames a discussion of Kraus and Antinââ¬â¢s work, allowing for a critical co-reading of works produced at different
